Our journeys are about more than seeing sights and ticking places off a list. We focus on the places, people and traditions that make Italy unique – creating genuine encounters and opportunities to experience local life, flavours and stories. Small groups allow us to travel more personally and connect more deeply with the places we visit.
FAQ
Everything you need to know
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Questions, answered.
How large are your travel groups?
We deliberately keep our groups small, usually between 6 and 16 travellers. This allows for a more personal way of travelling, with time and space to connect with the people, places and stories along the way.
Small groups also make it possible to visit places and enjoy experiences that would often not be accessible to larger groups – from small family-run accommodations and local workshops to intimate tastings and encounters with the people behind the places we visit. Our tour leaders can get to know the group and provide personal support throughout the journey.
Is travel to and from Italy included?
No. Our travellers join us from different parts of the world, so travel to the starting point in Italy and onward travel from the end point are not included in the journey price.
Our journeys begin and end in cities or locations that are well connected to public transport and, where possible, international airports, making arrival and departure as straightforward as possible. We are also happy to share practical information and suggestions to help you plan your journey to and from Italy. Please note that we do not arrange or book flights.
Are your journeys suitable for solo travellers?
Absolutely. All our journeys are suitable for solo travellers.
Our small groups are intended to create a warm and relaxed atmosphere, making it easy to share the journey with like-minded travellers while still having space for your own moments. During free time or for meals that are not included in the programme, we usually offer suggestions or optional opportunities to spend time together.
How do I book a journey?
Once you have chosen your preferred journey, simply send us a booking request here. We will then send you an offer with all relevant information and details. A 30% deposit is required to confirm your booking. And then? Just look forward to your journey through Italy.
I can no longer travel on my booked dates. Can I join another journey instead?
If your plans change and you are unable to travel on your booked dates, but would like to join us at another time, please contact us via info@thehiddenitaly.tours.
Depending on the journey, availability and the timing of your request, we will be happy to look into possible solutions with you. Any changes remain subject to the applicable booking conditions.
I really like your journeys, but I would prefer to travel with my own group. Is that possible?
Yes. We would be delighted to create a private journey for your family, friends, private group or company.
This could be based on one of our existing journeys or developed as something entirely new around your interests, travel style and wishes. From food and wine to art, culture, nature or slow living, we can create a journey that is truly your own.

Are there any age restrictions?
You must be at least 18 years old to book one of our journeys independently. There is no upper age limit.
Our journeys vary in terms of pace and physical activity. Some involve more walking, stairs or time spent outdoors than others, which is why a reasonable level of mobility and fitness is generally required. If you have any physical limitations or concerns, please contact us before booking. We will be happy to provide further information about the specific journey and its requirements, helping you decide whether it is a suitable choice for you.
I am travelling alone. Do I have to pay a supplement?
Not necessarily. If you book a shared double room, you do not pay a single-room supplement. A supplement applies only if you wish to book a room for single use.
The applicable single-room supplement, where available, is listed on the page of each individual journey.
Are transfers during the journeys included?
Yes, all transfers required for the planned route and programme are included in the journey price, unless otherwise stated.
Whenever possible, we travel by public transport – a very authentic way to experience local life while reducing our environmental impact. For more remote places or whenever public transport is not the most practical option, we use private transfers. Wherever possible, we work with small local transport companies.
The individual journey page will always indicate whether the programme includes public transport, private transfers or a combination of both.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
All our accommodations are carefully selected, with the category indicated on each journey page. In rural areas, we often stay in agriturismi – farms and country estates offering guest accommodation and an authentic glimpse into local life. In towns and cities, we usually choose b&bs and small hotels.
Are all journeys accompanied by a tour leader?
Yes, all our journeys are personally accompanied by an experienced tour leader.
The tour leader is there throughout the journey to coordinate the programme, take care of the practical details, facilitate encounters and help you navigate Italy beyond the obvious. Most importantly, the tour leader is there to create a relaxed and personal atmosphere, allowing you to focus on what really matters: discovering places, meeting people and enjoying the journey.
What language are your journeys conducted in?
Our journeys are generally conducted in English, with Italian naturally part of the journey. Some journeys may be offered in another language, which will always be clearly indicated on the individual journey page. German, French and Spanish may be available, depending on the journey. For private or tailormade journeys, other languages can be arranged where possible.
We aim to make communication relaxed and inclusive, so everyone can feel comfortable throughout the journey.
Are tips included?
Tips are not included in the journey price. Whether and how much you would like to tip is entirely up to you. There is no obligation to give tips.
Do I have to buy anything during producer or artisan visits?
Not at all, our journeys are not sales trips. We visit local producers, artisans and artists because their work, stories and connection to the region are part of what makes a place special. Tastings, visits and demonstrations included in the programme are arranged and paid for by us.
If you discover something you would like to take home, you are of course welcome to make a purchase directly from the producer, artisan or artist – but there is absolutely no expectation or obligation to do so.
Can you accommodate special dietary requirements?
Please let us know about any food allergies, intolerances or specific dietary requirements when submitting your booking request.
We will do our best to take your requirements into account. As we work with a variety of small, independent local businesses, however, we cannot guarantee that every dietary requirement can be accommodated in every situation.
Is personal travel insurance included?
No, individual travel insurance is not included in the journey price.
We recommend arranging suitable travel insurance, including cancellation and travel medical cover, according to your personal needs and circumstances. It is the traveller’s responsibility to arrange any insurance they consider necessary for the journey.
When do I pay for my journey?
To confirm your booking, a deposit of 30% of the journey package price is required. The remaining balance is due three months before the start of the journey.
Further information on payment options and the payment process will be provided together with your individual offer. Full details regarding payment terms and conditions can be found here.
Can I give a journey as a gift?
Yes, you can purchase a The Hidden Italy gift voucher and give someone the opportunity to choose a journey that speaks to them.
The recipient can select their preferred journey and submit their booking directly with us. To arrange a gift voucher, simply contact us by email to info@thehiddenitaly.tours.
Is there a loyalty club for returning travellers?
Yes, absolutely. Once you have travelled with us, you are welcome to join The Hidden Italy Travel Club.
Members receive 5% off the journey price of future journeys (excluding single-room supplements and add-ons), along with a special newsletter filled with inspiration, stories and behind-the-scenes glimpses from The Hidden Italy. As a THI Travel Club Member, you will also receive invitations to selected events, previews and special opportunities to discover Italy with us – and stay connected to the people, places and stories that make our journeys unique.
To join, simply contact us at info@thehiddenitaly.tours.
Will I receive further information before my journey?
Yes, the journey begins before you arrive in Italy!
In the weeks and months before departure, we will keep you updated with practical information about the programme, organisation and preparations. Depending on the journey, this may include further details about what to pack, meeting points, the route and other useful information to help you prepare and start looking forward to the places, stories and moments ahead.
On arrival, you will also receive a Journey Booklet with detailed information about the programme, the places we visit and selected insider tips along the way.
Why are The Hidden Italy journeys priced the way they are?
Our journeys are designed with years of experience, great care and close attention to detail. We take time to select the places we stay, the restaurants we visit and the local partners we work with.
Keeping our groups small is an essential part of the experience – but it also means that the costs of organising and accompanying a journey are shared by fewer travellers than on large group tours. At the same time, small groups allow for a more personal level of support and make many of the places, encounters and experiences included in our journeys possible in the first place.
Our prices also include much of what you need once the journey begins, such as the accommodation, the planned programme, required transfers and the experiences and services listed for the individual journey. This means that, depending on the journey, there are often relatively few additional costs during the journey beyond personal expenses and items not listed as included.
For us, value is not about luxury in the traditional sense. It is about travelling in small groups, with personal care, carefully chosen places and genuine connections to the Italy we love.
How can I cancel my journey?
If you need to cancel your journey, please contact us by email as soon as possible.
According to our booking conditions, cancellation is possible free of charge up to 90 days before the start of the journey. Further information about cancellation terms and any applicable charges can be found in our Terms & Conditions.
What should I pack?
We generally recommend travelling as lightly as possible, especially on journeys that include several destinations and accommodation changes.
What you need will naturally depend on the season and the character of your chosen journey. As a general guideline, we recommend packing for warm, sunny days as well as cooler evenings, bringing suitable rain protection and comfortable shoes. More detailed packing recommendations will be provided before your journey.
Where do the journeys begin and end?
Our journeys begin and end in or near major cities with good connections to public transport and international airports, making them easy to reach. The exact starting and ending points are indicated on each journey page.
Can I extend my stay before or after the journey?
Absolutely. If you would like to arrive earlier or stay longer, we are happy to help with the arrangements. We can also create individual packages including accommodation, activities, meals or private guidance. Simply share your plans with us, and we will be happy to explore the possibilities with you.
Can I join an Art Retreat if I’m accompanying someone but don’t want to take part in the art workshops?
Absolutely. You are very welcome to join an Art Retreat as an accompanying guest, even if you don’t take part in the art workshops. We offer a special option including accommodation, meals, excursions and everything else included in the programme – except the art workshops. While your partner or friend is getting creative, you can enjoy some dolce far niente or explore the surroundings at your own pace.
