About
The idea behind The Hidden Italy.
WE TRAVEL SLOWLY
Explore Italy's hidden treasures.
There is the Italy everyone knows.
And then there is the Italy you discover when you take the slower road. A village beyond the guidebooks.
An artisan still working with the hands. An olive grove shaped by generations. A cultural heritage still alive today. A recipe and shared dinner around a kitchen table.
This is the Italy we travel for. The Hidden Italy creates carefully curated small-group journeys beyond the obvious – connecting travellers with the people, traditions, landscapes and flavours that give each place its soul.
We travel slowly. We stay small. We look closely. We choose local partners, small businesses and places with a story. We take time for conversations, long lunches, unexpected discoveries and moments that cannot be found on a checklist.
Because the most meaningful way to discover Italy is not simply to see more. It is to experience more deeply.

Travel
through connection
At the heart of every journey are people.
Local hosts, artisans, farmers, winemakers, chefs, artists and producers are not simply service providers along our itineraries.
They are part of the story of the destination.
We believe that meeting the people who live and work in a place offers a deeper understanding of Italy than simply seeing its sights.
These encounters create a sense of place – and turn a journey into something truly meaningful.
Small groups, meaningful experiences
The Hidden Italy travels in small groups of approximately 6 to 16 travellers. Small groups allow us to do something that is increasingly difficult in contemporary tourism: travel personally. There is time to talk, to ask questions, to change the pace, to linger a little longer. We can respond to the interests of the group and create a more intimate atmosphere between travellers and local hosts.
It also allows us to visit places that simply could not accommodate large groups – from small family – run restaurants to artisan workshops and rural producers. The result is a balance between a thoughtfully designed itinerary and the freedom to experience each journey at a decent pace.
Local living – A place is more than what you see
The Hidden Italy seeks to create a sense of local living – experiencing a destination not only as a visitor, but through some of the rhythms, flavours and traditions of everyday life.
That might mean staying in a restored farmhouse surrounded by olive trees, visiting a local market, travelling by regional train, sitting down for a long lunch, learning how a traditional product is made or walking through a village with someone who knows its stories.
Our journeys leave room for the unexpected: a conversation with a local, a coffee on a beautiful piazza, or simply a moment to watch everyday life unfold.
Because some of the most memorable moments cannot be scheduled.
Italian cuisine:
taste the place
Food is not an addition to our journeys. It is a key to understanding what defines Italy and its culture. Every region has its own ingredients, recipes, agricultural traditions and rituals around food – shaped by geography, history and generations of local knowledge. Italian cooking, between sustainability and biocultural diversity, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Our culinary experiences connect travellers directly with this heritage: visits to olive oil producers, wineries and cheesemakers, tastings of regional specialities, markets, family kitchens, cooking experiences, culinary walks and meals in carefully selected local restaurants. The focus is not simply on eating well, but on understanding where food comes from, who makes it and why it matters. Because a taste can tell a story.
Places to stay, not simply places to sleep
Accommodation is an important part of the experience.
Whenever possible, we choose small, characterful places with a genuine connection to their surroundings: agriturismi, family-run B&Bs, boutique guesthouses and small hotels.
An agriturismo is typically a working farm or rural property that also welcomes guests – often surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, orchards or countryside.
It offers a way of staying closer to the landscape and the people who live and work there.
We favour places with character, history and a sense of belonging over anonymous accommodation.
The place you stay is part of the journey.
The journey between
the places matters
Whenever practical, we use public transport as part of the journey. Travelling by regional train or local bus is not only a more conscious way of moving through Italy; it can also offer a more authentic experience of everyday life.
For more remote destinations, private transfers provide comfort and flexibility. Whenever possible, these are arranged in collaboration with small local transport companies, keeping our network of partners close to the communities we visit.
We believe responsible travel does not have to mean sacrificing comfort. It means making thoughtful choices about how, where and with whom we travel.
Making a difference: traveling with local impact
The Hidden Italy works with small local businesses and independent partners, particularly in rural and lesser-known areas.
We collaborate with family-run accommodations, local restaurants, farmers, wineries, olive oil producers, cheesemakers, artisans, artists, cultural organisations and small transport companies.
This approach helps keep the economic value of tourism within the communities we visit while allowing travellers to experience places through people who know them from the inside.
For us, responsible travel is not a separate product category.
It is part of how every journey is created.
